The Ladybug Chronicles: A Journey of Digital Community, Collaboration, and Connection
30 August 2026
My journey into digital space began in 2016 when a close friend and I co-founded a Facebook fan group for a popular television series. What started as a casual passion project laid the groundwork for a deeper engagement with online community building.
When the pandemic hit, being homebound led me to discover live gaming streams on Facebook. My active involvement quickly evolved into moderating for a prominent streamer. Over the course of four and a half years, I followed his channel across various platforms before eventually establishing a permanent presence on OpenChat. While he has since moved on, I built a lasting home there, growing and owning three vibrant communities.
OpenChat is also where I met my collaborator, Rooty (known professionally as Niki Spires). Given my early adoption of the platform, I offered strategic insights to help navigate its features. Recognizing the value of that experience, Rooty invited me to join his team. Preferring to remain flexible due to existing commitments, I took on an advisory role to assist his team through initial operational challenges.
As our digital space expanded, members formed strong bonds through their chosen avatars and personas, creating a rich, diverse network. Driven by a long-standing vision, Rooty proposed weaving these dynamic personalities into a original book.
With shared dedication, our partnership expanded from casual collaboration into a formal business venture designed to address meaningful gaps in the community. We founded The Woven Roots Company to give structure, purpose, and legal backing to our growing portfolio of ideas.
Following a year of strategic planning, continuous dialogue, and character development, those initial concepts materialized into The Misadventures of Hightrees and Yibnib: Shattered Island. Rooty led the creative authorship while I provided foundational support, organization, and project management—including bringing to life the character of Ladybug, a unique hybrid turtle serving as Keeper of the Scrolls and adviser to the Queen's Counsel.
Ultimately, this endeavor represents far more than a corporate entity, a publishing milestone, or notes on a page. It is a testament to the power of digital collaboration, enduring friendship, and finding your true belonging.
As Rooty always says: "Write that down."
